Twitter has officially released its “Edit Tweet” feature for Twitter Blue subscribers. The news and microblogging platform will make the edit feature available only to residents of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
In this post, we’ll be talking about Twitter’s new premium-only feature and what it means for the integrity of tweets on the platform.
Twitter Blue Subscribers Getting Edit Feature
The “Edit Tweet” feature Twitter announced earlier this year will be made exclusively for users who are Twitter Blue subscribers. Its release comes a few days after Twitter posted the first edited tweet on its official Twitter Blue account.
On September 30, Twitter shared this text through its platform:
Hello, this is a test to see if the edit button works, we’ll let you know how it goes.
Australia, Canada, and New Zealand; But not the US
Barely a week later, it tweeted to confirm the release and availability of the new feature:
The test went well, Edit Tweet is going to be available for Twitter Blue Members residing in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand!
The US coming soon
Twitter has said that “Edit tweet” will roll out only to its Twitter Blue members in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. While it isn’t available in the US, Twitter says that “Edit Tweet” will come to America soon enough.
However, there is no specified date for releasing the US edit feature.
How Edit Tweet Works
Through Twitter’s September 30 tweet, users can see how “Edit Tweet” looks and functions. A pencil icon will be visible under an edited tweet to show that the tweet has been edited. By the side of the pencil icon is a timestamp to indicate the time a text was edited and clicking on it will display all versions of the tweet.
Twitter Blue users can edit them up to five times in 30 minutes. Users scrolling on their feed can easily see and use the pencil and timestamp labels to view the edit records of a tweet.
Users have been requesting an edit feature for quite a while now. But with the feature release for Twitter Blue users, it seems it’s a matter of time before Twitter decides to make “Edit Tweet” available in more countries and for regular users.
Twitter has said it will use this opportunity to learn how people use the feature, and that “Edit Tweet” could be edited and redesigned depending on how people use it.
The social media giant says that introducing the feature to its paid users will enable them to gather more insight on how it can tune the features’ functionality accordingly.
The limited availability also provides Twitter with an opportunity to observe if users abuse it, and Twitter would have the time and capability to implement any emergency safeguards if necessary.
Conclusion
“Edit Tweet” is essentially a paid service and will only be accessible by Twitter Blue members in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Along with the edit feature, members subscribing to this package will also gain access to an additional feature called “Undo Tweets.”
